Variable Frequency Drive Reactor

Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) Reactor: Function and Applications A Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) reactor, also known as a line reactor or DC choke, is a passive electrical component used to improve the performance and reliability of VFD systems. VFDs are widely employed in industrial and commercial applications to control the speed and torque of AC motors by adjusting the frequency and voltage of the power supply. However, the operation of VFDs can introduce electrical disturbances such as harmonics, voltage spikes, and current distortions, which may affect both the drive and connected equipment. The VFD reactor plays a critical role in mitigating these issues. Function of a VFD Reactor 1. Harmonic Reduction – VFDs generate harmonic currents due to their non-linear switching nature. These harmonics can distort the power supply, leading to overheating of transformers, cables, and other connected devices. A reactor, when installed on the input (line) side of the VFD, acts as a filter, limiting harmonic currents and improving power quality. 2. Voltage Spike Protection – Fast-switching semiconductor devices (IGBTs) in VFDs can produce high-frequency voltage spikes that may damage motor insulation over time. A reactor smooths these transient voltages, reducing stress on the motor windings and extending equipment lifespan. 3. Current Limitation – During sudden load changes or short-circuit conditions, reactors help limit inrush currents, protecting the VFD and motor from excessive stress. 4. DC Bus Stabilization – In some cases, DC link reactors are used between the rectifier and inverter stages of a VFD to stabilize the DC bus voltage, reducing ripple and improving overall efficiency. Types of VFD Reactors - Line Reactors (AC Reactors) – Installed on the input side of the VFD to suppress harmonics and protect against voltage transients from the power supply. - Load Reactors (Output Reactors) – Placed between the VFD and motor to reduce reflected waves and prevent motor insulation damage. - DC Link Reactors – Used in the DC bus section to smooth current fluctuations and enhance system stability. Applications VFD reactors are essential in industries such as HVAC, water treatment, manufacturing, and mining, where motor-driven systems require precise speed control. They are particularly beneficial in installations with long cable runs between the VFD and motor, as well as in environments with sensitive electronic equipment that may be affected by electrical noise. Conclusion By mitigating harmonics, reducing voltage spikes, and stabilizing current flow, VFD reactors enhance the efficiency, reliability, and longevity of motor control systems. Their use is a cost-effective solution to minimize power quality issues and ensure smooth operation in variable frequency drive applications.

CKSG Series Low-Voltage Series ReactorApplicationThe CKSG series dry-type iron-core series reactors are used in low-voltage reactive power compensation cabinets and are connected in series with capacitors. In low-voltage power networks with numerous harmonic sources such as rectifiers and converters, the resulting higher-order harmonics can seriously endanger the safe operation of main transformers and other electrical equipment. When connected in series with capacitors, the reactor can effectively absorb grid harmonics, improve system voltage waveform, enhance the system power factor, suppres...
